The Chairperson of the African Union Commission is the head of the African Union Commission.[2] They are the Chief Executive Officer, legal representative of the African Union (AU), and the Commission’s Chief Accounting Officer. They are elected for a four year term, renewable once, by the Assembly of the African Union.[3]

The chairperson is responsible for the Commission's finances and administration, promoting its objectives, dealing with key stakeholders (member states, development partners, regional blocs etc.), appointing and managing Commission staff, and storing AU and OAU treaties and legal instruments.[3]

History

[edit]

The predecessor of the African Union, the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), had an equivalent role titled the Secretary General of the Organisation of African Unity, however it had weaker powers.[4]

In 2002 the OAU evolved into the African Union, with the Secretary General replaced with the Chairperson of the Commission. This new role became more vocal in their praise or condemnation. It has a monthly salary of $15,576.75 along with perks for funding children's education. The Commission Chairperson is responsible for facilitating and reporting all AU organ meetings, and for ensuring conformity between all AU initiatives. They also prepare the AU's annual report. The Commission Chairperson is elected via secret ballot in the Assembly, and must have two-thirds majority of present voting members.[4]

On 30 January 2017, after seven rounds of voting, Chad's Moussa Faki was elected chairperson over Kenya's Amina Mohamed.[5] He was re-elected in 2021 for another four year term which ends in 2025.
